The secondary navigation menu for the IT Website appears on the left-hand side of intenal pages, and it shows all the pages of that section.
The navigation is automatically generated based on the parent/child page relationships of the section. By default, the sub-pages in the menu are ordered alphabetically, but the order can be manually configured.
Configuring the start point for the navigation
By default, the secondary navigation starts from the highest-level parent page for a section. In the nested list below, any of the bold and green pages on the list would have a secondary navigation that starts at “Top-level page 1” and showed all descendants of that page.
- Top-level page 1
- Child page 1.1
- Child page 1.1.1
- Child page 1.1.2
- Child page 1.2
- Child page 1.3
- Child page 1.1
- Top-level page 2
- Child page 2.1
The starting point of the navigation can be configured to start at any page by toggling a configuration option on that page. For exmaple, you can configure “Child page 1.1” to be the start point for a menu, and the menu would start at that page and only contain the descendants of that page, illustrated with bold and blue below.
- Top-level page 1
- Child page 1.1
- Child page 1.1.1
- Child page 1.1.2
- Child page 1.2
- Child page 1.3
- Child page 1.1
- Top-level page 2
- Child page 2.1
To configure the starting location:
- Open the edit screen of the page you want the navigation to start from
- Scroll down until you find the Sidebar Menu Configuration v2 field group, located on the right-hand side of the page
- Toggle the Start Menu Here option in Start Menu from This Page
NOTE: It is possible to configure multiple pages within a hierarchy to be starting locations for the navigation. In the case that multiple levels of the hierarchy are configured as starting locations, the closest parent is used for all of its child pages.
How to set the order of pages in the section menu
While the pages in the left-side section level menu are ordered alphabetically by default, you can change the order items in the menu appear. You do this by setting an order weight on each sub-page of the section.
For each page in a section:
- Open the page’s edit screen
- On the far-right side of the screen, there are several boxes with bold titles and various configuration options below. Scroll down to locate the box labeled “Page Attributes”
- Within that box, locate a text field labeled “Order”
- Put an order number in that field, starting from 0 (which is the default). Pages will be ordered based on the number in that field (lower is higher). So a page numbered 1 will appear above a page numbered 2. If any pages share the same order number, they will appear alphabetically ordered to each other, but within the sort order context based on all pages order.
- Tip: Pages don’t need to be ordered sequentially by 1. Ordering pages by 5 or 10 leaves room to insert other pages into the order later. For example, ordering pages “5, 10, 15, 20, and 25” will allow you to create a new page later, and sort it as the 3rd page on the navigation by setting its order to 12.
- Click the blue “Update” or “Publish” button within the “Publish” box on the far right.
