Application Portfolio Management

Last updated: May 1, 2026
Audience: StaffIT Staff / Technical

The Enterprise Architecture program in UWIT is currently prototyping a tool to track the inventory of applications at the University.

The Application Portfolio Management (APM) Tool supports the following goals:

  • Enable project and programs, including transformation programs by providing a current state landscape of systems.
  • Rationalization: Analyzing apps based on business value (importance to operations) vs. technical quality (health/risk) to decide which to keep, replace, or retire.
  • Cost Optimization: Reducing expenses by eliminating redundant functionality and managing software licenses.
  • Risk Management: Identifying unsupported or legacy software to mitigate security vulnerabilities.
  • Strategic Alignment: Ensuring that IT investments support current business objectives.

The initial scope of tracked applications includes UW Academy and excludes UW Medicine applications.

Authorized users can access the tool with a UW Net ID at https://apm.esmtools.uw.edu.
