Application Portfolio Management

Application Portfolio Management (APM) at the UW supports the following goals:

  • Enable project and programs, including transformation programs by providing a current state landscape of systems.
  • Rationalization: Analyzing apps based on business value (importance to operations) vs. technical quality (health/risk) to decide which to keep, replace, or retire.
  • Cost Optimization: Reducing expenses by eliminating redundant functionality and managing software licenses.
  • Risk Management: Identifying unsupported or legacy software to mitigate security vulnerabilities.
  • Strategic Alignment: Ensuring that IT investments support current business objectives.

The initial scope of tracked applications includes UW Academy and excludes UW Medicine applications.

The EA team is currently prototyping a tool for managing the application portfolio at the University.
