How to Get Microsoft Teams Premium
About Microsoft Teams Premium
Microsoft Teams Premium is an add-on license that adds to the basic Teams experience by offering advanced features like
- AI-generated meeting summaries
- Real-time caption translations
- Custom meeting branding
- End-to-end encryption
Teams Premium also supports larger meetings and webinars, up to 10,000 participants in view-only mode (compared to basic Teams, which is up to 1,000), and provides deeper analytics and enhanced security options, such as conditional access.
UWIT and UW Medicine enable only features that are FERPA-compliant and meet UW privacy and security policies. UW Medicine has only reviewed these features for HIPAA use cases involving transitory communication and incidental (i.e., accidental or unintentional) Protected Health Information (PHI).
Benefits of UW Teams Premium
- Supports more free-flowing discussion because meeting participants are not burdened with taking notes.
- Preserves institutional data within Teams Premium, where privacy and security agreements are in place. Eliminates the need for third-party external AI tools that may not be approved for use (e.g., otter.ai or read.ai) to generate a meeting summary and provides an alternative to ZoomAI for units that prefer Teams.
- Streamlines comprehension of key takeaways and action items by organizing meeting summaries recorded to the cloud into short sections.
Guidelines for using AI tools
Protecting UW information for our students, faculty, and staff is a shared responsibility for everyone at the UW. Before using Teams Premium, review the guidelines for using AI-based tools at UW.
For UW Medicine workforce, including UW School of Medicine, please review UW Medicine’s Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Healthcare Setting.
How UW Teams Premium handles your data
Teams Premium does not use your data to train external AI models. Teams Premium does not use any of your audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments or other communication—such as poll results, whiteboard and reactions—to train Microsoft’s or any third-party artificial intelligence models.

Limitations of Microsoft Teams Premium AI Features
While AI-powered features can be valuable tools that increase productivity, AI outputs and AI-generated content do have limitations and are not perfect. The performance of AI-powered systems is based on the data they have been trained on, which can lead to errors or inaccuracies (such as leaving out critical information or creating inaccurate content, also called “hallucinations”) when presented with new or unexpected situations. UW Teams Premium utilizes developing AI technology, and Team Premium features may provide incorrect, inaccurate, misleading, or offensive responses. It is important for individuals using UW Teams Premium features to verify the accuracy of any AI-generated content.
