Matlab

MATLAB is a programming and numeric computing platform that engineers and scientists use to analyze data, develop algorithms, and create models.

This license also entitles you to use MATLAB online and MATLAB mobile.

How to Get Matlab

Students

  • Students may obtain a free Matlab license for personal computers. Visit the UW portal at Mathworks to register your UW student Mathworks account and download the software.

Faculty, Staff, or UW-Owned Lab Computers

  • Faculty and staff may purchase MATLAB through UWare, which includes all toolboxes. The order form is below.
  • Once the purchase order is fulfilled, you will receive a confirmation link to the  UW-managed Mathworks portal. From there, you can register and download the Matlab installer.
  • Purchase requires valid UW worktags and authorization from a budget approver.
  • No Procurement cards or direct sales to individuals are available.
  • Matlab is available through an annual subscription, with the license period running from July 1 through June 30.
  • UW-IT cannot prorate or refund the cost of the Matlab license subscription.
  • UW-IT will automatically bill for the Matlab license in the following license cycle. Please don’t submit a new purchase request for the existing Matlab license.

License Details

  • Named user licenses are assigned to specific individuals. The client application can be installed on two devices and is accessible only to the assigned user.
  • An individual license can’t be assigned to a shared UW NetID.
  • The license grants access to Matlab’s “Campus Edition” and includes all toolboxes.
  • All users must renew their Matlab license with MathWorks every year.
  • The license may be used for (i) software administration, teaching, and non-commercial academic research by UW employees (faculty and academic staff) and (ii) meeting classroom requirements and study purposes for enrolled students at UW. Work funded under a grant is considered “academic,” while work supported by a contract is likely “commercial” and not covered under the license. Any other use is expressly prohibited.
  • UW-IT’s annual subscription billing is automatic:
UW-IT will automatically bill your UW funding source for this software subscription in the next license term, which begins every (fiscal) year on July 1.
  • Do you need to reassign the license to another person? You can make a reassignment request anytime during the subscription period by going to Manage My Subscriptions and completing the request form to transfer the subscription.
  • Should you need to cancel the subscription:
If you decide not to continue with another subscription term, you can stop UW-IT’s automatic billing and cancel the subscription. Canceling means your subscription will end on June 30. Use the Manage My Subscriptions Form, and do so no later than June 1.

Additional Information

Matlab and the Hyak Research Cluster

MATLAB is available in the Hyak Research Cluster, an integrated and scalable scientific super-computing infrastructure operated by UW-IT. Faculty and staff can request an evaluation account to determine if it meets their research needs. When Hyak is ready for production, you can start by purchasing a single node. Prices and descriptions are available here:

If you are a student, you can access Hyak with purchased MATLAB software for your independent research through the HPC Club:

  • No.

  • Once your order is processed, access to the UW Mathworks portal is granted. Please visit the portal to create your Mathworks account and associate it with the UW TAH license. You can download Matlab and the toolboxes of your choice from the UW Mathworks portal.

  1. Open MATLAB (If the license has expired, the activation client will launch, and you can skip the next step).
  2. Navigate to Help on the toolbar and select Licensing.
  3. Click on Activate Software. The MATLAB licensing module starts. Click “allow” if prompted.
  4. Choose to Activate using the Internet and select “UW Individual Licenses.” Follow the prompts to complete the process.
  5. Once complete, you must restart MATLAB before the new license file is recognized. You might continue to see the expiration warning in MATLAB until the old file expires. Once the activation process finishes successfully, it will roll over to the new license file once the old one expires.
