Claude is an AI assistant that helps with research, writing, analysis, coding, creative projects, and problem-solving. Use Claude to draft content, work through complex problems, analyze documents, write and debug code, organize information, or explore ideas.

How to Get Claude

UW Faculty and Staff

Named User Licenses are available for purchase for faculty and staff.

• Purchase requires valid UW worktags and authorization from a budget approver.
• No Procurement cards or direct sales to individuals are available.

UW Medicine

• Claude is unavailable to people affiliated with UW Medical Center, School of Medicine, or UW Medicine.

License Details

Usage Limits

Claude for Education subscriptions include a defined amount of usage rather than being billed by token. Claude Premium contains 5X the token usage as standard

If you reach your included usage limit, Claude will temporarily pause new requests until the applicable usage period resets. You will not automatically incur additional charges, and your existing conversations and work will remain available.

Anthropic does not publish a fixed token allowance for Standard or Premium subscriptions, so actual capacity varies based on the models and features being used.

Claude for Education does not include Anthropic API usage. Users who require programmatic/API access should use an approved UW API service such as Azure Foundry.

• A Claude License is assigned to an individual, and all its features will be available to the assigned user when signed in to Claude License.
• The license cannot be assigned to a Shared NetID.
• UWIT’s annual subscription billing is automatic:
 UWIT will automatically bill your UW funding source for this software subscription in the next license term on October 1.
• Do you need to reassign the license to another person? You can make a reassignment request at any time during the subscription period by going to Manage My Subscriptions and completing the request form to transfer the subscription.
• Should you need to cancel the subscription:
If you decide not to continue with another subscription term, you can stop UW-IT’s automatic billing and cancel the subscription. Canceling your subscription means it will end on September 30. Use the Manage My Subscriptions Form, and do so no later than August 30.

Additional Information

• Chat History: If you join the UW version of Claude AI, your existing chat history will be migrated to the UW-managed system. This change is permanent. If you want to keep a copy or remove your history, please do that before joining.
• API Access: This Claude AI version does not include access to the Claude API.
