ChatGPT

ChatGPT Edu is a virtual assistant that supports answering questions, drafting documents, summarizing text, creating images, and automating processes. Through an enterprise agreement with OpenAI, the University of Washington provides access to ChatGPT, ensuring University data is securely stored and not used to train models. ChatGPT offers advanced language capabilities, image generation, and custom agents.

This ChatGPT version does not include OpenAI API. For that type of AI functionality, please visit our GitHub Copilot Page

ChatGPT in UWare is experimental, and its presence in the catalog in the future is not guaranteed.

Credit Usage

Please note that some actions in ChatGPT require the use of credits. Our contract allows for an average usage of 200 credits per person per month. If a user is identified as using an excessive amount of credits per month, UWare may reach out with a request to minimize usage of ChatGPT credits, and if the licensee continues to use too many credits, their license may be revoked. Unfortunately, there is no way for an individual to track their credit usage at this time. To learn more about what actions in ChatGPT Edu require credits, please view the ChatGPT Rate Card

Existing @uw.edu accounts

When you accept an invite to a ChatGPT EDU workspace, you will join a collaborative workspace shared with other team members. If you also have a ChatGPT Personal workspace with your @uw.edu account you will have one of 2 options:

  1. Keep your ChatGPT Personal workspace. This allows you to keep your data from your Personal workspace separate from your EDU workspace, which you can access when you switch between workspaces.
  2. Merge your ChatGPT Personal workspace into your EDU workspace. This allows you to migrate data from your Personal workspace to your EDU workspace to become one unified workspace, this option will delete your personal workspace after migration.

If you migrate your data, that data is now considered part of the EDU workspace. If you lose access to your EDU workspace, you will also lose access to the migrated data. This means that if you ever leave or are removed from the EDU workspace, or if the workspace itself is deactivated, you will lose access to all your data in your EDU workspace. More details.
