CrashPlan
CrashPlan is an automatic desktop backup solution. It runs silently in the background on all devices and provides real-time recovery, so you can always access your data no matter what happens.
CrashPlan features:
- Unlimited real-time backup and recovery
- Supports Mac, Windows, and Linux
- Up to four UW-owned devices per user (laptops and desktops)
- Use your NetID for secure access and convenience
- Data is encrypted end-to-end during transfer to and from the cloud and while at rest
- Previous versions are kept for each file
- You choose what files and folders are backed up, and you can restore them yourself anytime, anywhere
- Backup data is compressed to minimize productivity interference.
How to Get CrashPlan
- All Staff and Faculty
- Requires valid UW worktags and authorization from a budget approver.
- No Procurement cards or direct sales to individuals are available.
- CrashPlan can only be installed on UW-owned equipment.
License Details
Named User Licenses are assigned to individuals. This software may be installed on multiple devices, but the named user may use it on only one device at a time.
- Data retention for a deactivated CrashPlan account is 30 days. After 30 days, the backups are purged from the “cold storage” to free up the license.
- Individual licenses cannot be assigned to a shared UW NetID.
- This software is available through an annual subscription, with the license period running from July 1 through June 30.
- UWIT cannot prorate or refund the cost of the software subscription.
- UWIT will automatically bill your UW funding source at the start of each license term, beginning July 1 of each fiscal year.
Modifying a Subscription
To transfer, cancel, or update a subscription worktag at any time, submit the Manage My Subscription Form. Cancellation requests must be submitted no later than June 1, and the subscription will end on June 30.

- Backups of the deactivated account are automatically purged after 30 days to free up the license.

- Archives are retained in Cold Storage for 30 days before being permanently deleted. Please note that licenses continue to be consumed during this archival period. Additional information about Cold Storage is here.
No. If you need continual access to the historical data, place the user on legal hold and keep them there until the data can be safely purged.
The machine hardware can be transferred, but the data and version history are tied to individual user accounts and cannot be moved between users.
Yes. All data under this enterprise license agreement will reside in Washington State.
CrashPlan is compatible with NIST 800-171 (Controlled Unclassified Information). However, to be compliant, UW must have clearly defined policies and procedures that are followed. UW is developing these policies and procedures, but they are not yet available.
