Data Loss Prevention with Varonis

Last updated: February 4, 2025

UW-IT is currently working to implement Varonis Data Loss Prevention services to better safeguard sensitive information and data. By automating data protections, UW-IT is improving how we detect data risks and prevent unauthorized access to ensure Husky data stays secure.

  • Finds and Protects Sensitive Data: Automatically discovers, classifies, and secures sensitive information.
  • Prevents Unauthorized Access: Detects public exposure and misconfigurations to reduce risk.
  • Stops Unauthorized Data Transfers: Monitors for unusual activity and takes action to prevent data breaches.
  • Enhanced Security: Protects UW’s data by identifying sensitive information, properly classifying it, and providing consistent monitoring.
  • Time-Saving Automation: Reduces manual work and tedious digging by conducting automated evaluations of existing systems.
  • Simplify Permissions Management: Identifies and classifies sensitive data with minimal user disruption.

What’s Next?

UW-IT will roll out Varonis to SharePoint and OneDrive systems starting this March. We’ll use Varonis to evaluate and correct the current data classification landscape in these systems to keep sensitive information secure.

From there, we’ll promote the UW Data Classification framework to ensure users can confidently classify their data moving forward. Proper data classification across the University will protect and enhance workflows, making it easier than ever to find what you need and know you’re private information is secure.
